city hall

been a huge fan of korean dramas since 2000.. when it exploded in the country in 2006, 2007, i was tired of all the corny and cliched stories, i switched to japanese dramas (which are fast paced - only 11 eps and had more interesting stories - mostly centering on the 2 main characters and some friends.. no evil parents, no love square). late last year, i heard good reviews of kim sun-ah's new drama with cha seung-won called "city hall". i love sun-ah.. her drama in 2005, my name is kim sam-soon is one of my personal faves (plus it stars hyun bin and daniel henney). i haven't watched any of seung-won's dramas/movies.. ive always thought he looked weird.
anyways, i downloaded the english-subbed version and watched it last month.. and wow!!! such an great drama! totally restored my faith with korean dramas! this was no ordinary drama. unlike idol dramas and the over-the-top dramatics that's been showing on tv these days, city hall was quite refreshing to watch. the main theme of the story is quite appropriate.. it's about politics and elections. it also portrayed a realistic relationship between two adults. no cutesy stuff (well sun-ah is some a funny charmer). no lame or petty misunderstandings, no dog-cat quarrels. no smooching on the lips (and holding it still) for 1 minute. a real romance.
just to give you a background - -

Jo Gook is an exceedingly smart government official. He passed the Higher Civil Service quickly, and basically is the perfect guy. But being a deputy mayor is not enough for him. He lives with the dream of becoming South Korea’s President. He should have easily gone straight to the top, but due to an unexpected incident, he gets dispatched as a deputy mayor for a provincial small town, Inju City, where Shin Mi Rae was working. Shin Mi Rae is a low-ranking secretary in Inju, but she works her way up in becoming the youngest City Mayor. As their paths met, they have to deal with each other’s personal and social differences. Ratings:

the first few episodes had a lot of funny scenes, though it was a bit confusing coz i didn't know where the story is headed, but the 7th to the last (20th) episode had great storytelling that i was addicted. the last few episodes had a lot of tearjerking and emotional scenes, esp the scenes with Seungwon and Sunah's character, and with Seungwon and his dad's characters. i didn't like the secondary leads (the married couple) though their own storyline was also pretty good. i really hated Seungwon's fiance at first but in the end, i liked and respected her.

here are some of my favorite scenes (in no particular order). this is going to be a long pic thread, mostly summarising Gook and Mirae's love story (without the politics spoilers): (excerpts taken from dramabeans)
meet ordinary woman Shin Mi Rae
Mi Rae announces that she's joining the Ms Baendenggi Pageant and proceeds to show them her S-line
Mi Rae continues to show them how pretty and doll-like she is..
Jo Gook: Ms Shin Mi Rae
Mi Rae (shyly): Yes?
Jo Gook: What kind of doll? Shrek? King Kong? Alien?
Mi Rae follows them to the pool...
Why are you doing this?” Jo Gook cries out, blinded for a moment. Mi Rae sadly admits that there is an age limit on the pageant that prevents her from entering. She is years too old for the maximum age limit of 24 years, so she needs him to raise the age limit.
Soo In and Jo Gook
meet Jo Gook's fiancee, Go Hae
Mi Rae is having troubles fitting in with the other beauties
Jo Gook asks Mirae to help him but she has other plans.
She plays the exasperated gf of Jo Gook to impress them

Jo Gook and Mi Rae perform the sexy tango
Mi Rae wins the Ms Baendenggi Pageant!
the runner up accuses Mi Rae of sleeping with Jo Gook (judge) and Mi Rae pretends to faint
Jo Gook to the rescue
Mi Rae celebrates her win and her friends ask her about Jo Gook. Mi Rae creates a story...
Mi Rae: Who was the one who jumped whom? I kept telling him that I didn’t want to, but he kept telling me to come to his room. Telling me to come after I had washed up. And as for how he hurt his back, I was taking a short nap and he lifted me up…
Mi Rae’s friends (Pandemonium as they all scream and talk all at once): Then what happened?
Mi Rae: Then I said, “Omo, what art thou doing, sir? Oh, please don’t be like this…” His breathing started to get heavy, but then I said to him in a tragically heroic fashion, “This is as far as I can go with you, I have to go.”
Mi Rae: When I said that, he grabbed me by my shoulders and spun me around, and said to me, “Do you really have that little clue, as to why I asked that you come to my room? …don’t say a word… if your words end up causing pain to my soul and to your soul, I’d rather not listen… There is only one thing I want to hear from your pretty lips…”
Mi Rae: We stared into each other’s eyes for a long, long time. Thereafter, he said in a soft voice to me…
Jo Gook (in real life): You are drinking again?
Jo Gook sits down and her friends start asking Jo Gook. Afraid that they'll discover she made up the story, she had to do something..
Mi Rae leaps to her feet and shouts, “WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE TOUCHING?” grabbing Jo Gook’s hands and motions that he was stroking her thighs.
Everyone is shocked!!!
Mi Rae asks Jo Gook to pretend they're lovers and Jo Gook swoops in for a kiss.. or did he?
no, it was a fake kiss which made Mi Rae
shaken

Mi Rae winning the elections and taking her mayoral oath
Jo Gook: Wowee... When I first met her, she was the kind of woman who could clear my head in a split-second, she was! This kind of feeling, could this be love?
Mi Rae's (gullible) friends: OMGOMGOMG!
Jo Gook: Yes, friends, this weird woman and I have fallen into the Sea of Love...!
Mi Rae's friends: And if you could describe Mi Rae in a single word, what would that be?
Jo Gook: Let's see, how shall i put it? Should I compare Shin Mi Rae to a doll...
Mi Rae (walking in unnoticed): What kind of doll? Shrek? King Kong? Alien?
Jo Gook: Ahh, of course, that would be King Kong... wahh??!

Love is starting for Mi Rae and Jo Gook
Jo Gook: These are things that the man has to do. So don't get into a car if your man doesn't open the door for you, nor should you sit down somewhere unless he puts a towel down on your seat, and don't even think about eating unless he has set down utensils for you...
walking hand in hand

Jo Gook: By any chance, have you ever had the occasion to slap a guy at wee hours of the morning?
Mi Rae (confused): …What?
Jo Gook: Will a 36-year old woman cry and bawl if a man ravishes her?
Jo Gook quickly kisses her lightly on the lips. Jo Gook recoils to await a slap, but Mi Rae just looks at Jo Gook with very wide eyes.
Jo Gook: Mmm… not enough to warrant a slap? Okay. I am going to do something now that will deserve a slap…
one of the best kisses in k-drama history
confrontation with Jo Gook, Mi Rae and BB which led to this..
a tearjerker scene between Mirae and Gook
Jo Gook:  Why didn’t you answer your phone?  Do you know how worried I have been?
Mi Rae:  In one night’s dream, we went on a trip together.  And in another night’s dream, we held hands.  On another night, we hugged each other.  On another night, we even fell asleep together.  And then it happened, that…
Mi Rae (continuing):  …that, on different night, just like day, we broke up just like this.
Jo Gook:  …please don’t treat me so harshly.
Mi Rae (now composed):  You once asked me what I would do if I found you as my opponent.  Shin Mi Rae has already lost to you.  But Mayor Shin cannot lose to you, can she?

funny scene where Jo Gook wanted a cute text but got an ox bone instead

first scene between the two where Go-hae told Mi-rae off for having an affair with her fiancee
Go Hae: But you, you seem different than the last time I saw you… is it because you have fallen in love? You look so pretty, Miss Shin Mi Rae…
Go Hae:  …Is it fun to be with him? He’s not really that much fun, is he?  Not romantic either. Do you meet with him often? Do you sleep with him and do things like that?
Go Hae: SIT!  I have had to put up with much worse that this, and you cannot even last 30 minutes? That wouldn’t be right…
Mi Rae (sits back down): …

Go Hae: That’s right. Sit in front of me and listen, as this is my punishment for you.
Mi Rae: What sort of things do you want to hear? To be honest, I don’t really have much to say. This is uncomfortable for me, and there are things here that seem very unfair. But… with sincerity, I am sorry.
Go Hae (incensed): “I’m sorry.”??? Did we just bump into each other on the street? By accident, did you step on my foot? Don’t you know that those are the circumstances when “I’m sorry” is said? Don’t you dare think that you can set yourself free from guilt by giving such a flimsy apology like that!
Mi Rae: Do you love him?
Go Hae: LOVE??! You act all good and noble, but in the end, the last card you pull is “love”?! Is Miss Shin Mi Rae’s defense only going to be that person’s heart? It looks like those who have nothing tend to use that hormone nonsense extravagantly, but I can do quite well without love. So go ahead and “love,” the two of you. Go right ahead. I’m saying that I won’t stop you… but tragic, isn’t it, that a sentence never ends with a comma, does it? Shin Mi Rae is just a comma in Jo Gook’s life, and not the period at the end.
Jo Gook can't stand hurting Mi-rae so he broke up with her

Jo Gook: Why do I have to help you? …It seems like you are always standing in my path, blocking my future. You were right. We cannot be on the same side.

Mi Rae: Right now… what are you…

Jo Gook: I’m sorry, but I am returning to my own proper place now.

Mi Rae: Assembly Member Jo…

Jo Gook (with suddenly caring eyes): But don’t lose to me. Don’t ever lose to me.

Jo Gook listening to Mi-rae's voice mail
Jo Gook: What are you so choked up about? …I have already booted you, Shin Mi Rae. I had all the fun that I wanted, and now you are no longer any fun.
Mi Rae: Why are you like this, really?
Jo Gook: Didn’t you say that you’ve broken up with men before? Didn’t you say you wept and carried on afterwords under a bridge? Well, you can do that again this time around. Which bridge were you talking about? Do you want me to bring you there?
Mi Rae: …
Jo Gook: I didn’t really intend to say this, but… my leaving, it’s not your fault.
Mi Rae: You want me to just forget you? You want me to just eat well and live well from now on? Don’t even dream of that happening.
Mi Rae: I’m not letting go of you. Until I breathe my last breath, I’m not sending you out of my heart. You can go if you wish. But even after you leave me, no matter where you go, no matter where you live or who you are with, you will always have two homes.
Mi Rae (pounding her chest): Because in here. Inside my heart here… you have a room. In this room, you and I will grow old together. And I will never let you go. Just thought you should know.
Go Hae: Oh, and I’m not sure whether I should bring this up… but I hear some rather tragic news. And so I gave that man a stern piece of my mind, I did… I am truly sorry. I thought it would last longer… I didn’t think that the comma would come so early in the sentence.
Mi Rae: How much do you know about him? …to him, I am neither a period nor a comma. I am his parenthesis. That person’s hidden meaning, is me. The person that you know is much different than the one that I know. When we are together, we are happy. And he has such a romantic side to him. But even so, you won’t be giving up your help to him, because of childish jealousy, will you?
sad scene of Go-hae realising she no longer has Jo Gook
heartbreaking scene of Jo Gook crying while eating and looking at Mi-Rae's picture
Mi Rae: In this world, do you know what is so difficult that you might fail even if you die trying? It is the act of giving someone your heart. But do you know what is even more difficult to deal with than that? It is when you give someone your heart, and nothing is returned to you.
Jo Gook: …
Mi Rae: After you hoped and hoped that my heart would be torn to pieces, are you satisfied now, you son of a bitch!?
crying in the rain
The two women shakes hands
Jo Gook: I have had a dream form inside of me. I want to become President of Korea one day. And on my inauguration day when I become President, just like tonight, I will be dancing with my wife…
Mi Rae (unsure where this is going): …
Jo Gook: On that inauguration day… won’t you dance with me?
the beautiful proposal

City Hall also has an amazing soundtrack that captures most of the scenes so accurately. Here's the lyrics to Park Sang Woo's "I love you and I love youDownload

I must be in love with you,
Because I can see only you
And all day long you wander through my mind.

I must be in love with you,
But my heart is still not familiar with you.
Wherever am I, whatever I do,
Thoughts of you come to me
I don’t know why, but this is love.

When you laugh, I am also happy and begin to smile
Like a child lost in his dream, I adore you to my heart’s content.
When I see you sad, my world crashes around me,
But you don’t know these feelings of mine.

Another song is by Horan (Clazziquai) called "Anxious LoveDownload
Can I really fall in love with you?
Why do I feel so anxious?
I've never felt this way before.
You must be special.
I do not fear love,
even if separation will come soon.
However, I do not want this love,
because I will keep on yearning for more.
Like water freely flowing in the stream,
I will entrust my heart to you.
As each day passes,
I'll find nothing that needs to be thrown away one at a time.

If I have you by my side,
If I think about you,
If I love you,
You seem like a person that won't stay long.
If I let you go,
If I leave you,
You seem like a person that will love me more.
Anxious love.
Even so, I like this love.

I love on my own, I let go on my own.
This true love,
I've waited so earnestly for you, but
we are ill-matched.
An unfortunate love.

If I have you by my side,
If I think about you,
If I love you,
You seem like a person that won't stay long.
If I let you go,
If I leave you,
You seem like a person that will love me more.
Anxious love.
Even so, I like this love.
Therefore, I will hold onto this love.
