beijing day 1

i'm glad i went to china last year before the whole panatag shoal started. as i've mentioned in my previous entry, while i identify myself as a filipino, of course i still want to acknowledge my ethnicity since i am 100% chinese and i was brought up in a mix of filipino and chinese culture and values.

my friend C and i arrived in beijing almost midnight on oct 21. thanks to my rusty but still reliable mandarin speaking skills we were able to navigate the non-English country without a lot of problems.

on our first day, we decided to head over to the huge huge area where the tiannanmen square and forbidden city were located. unfortunately there were quite a number of people queueing to go inside the two sites so C and i ended up walking towards the other side which had a huge square / park and the national museum of china.
china railways museum
qian men, which was located at the south side of tiannanmen square
old man playing a chinese musical instrument -- this was soo cool
some sights along the tiannanment square
last we headed over to the national museum of china. we only had 1 hour to go around the museum as it was almost closing time but it was so big we were only able to go around one large exhibition hall. when the museum finally closed, we stayed for a bit outside to do some pictorials :)
after walking around for almost 5 hours in the cold, we finally called it quits and went back to the hotel for a much needed rest.

MTV's Awkward is AWESOME!

i was curious about this show from MTV called Awkward and i got the full season 1 and watched it... and i'm so glad i did!
Jenna is the lead character of the show. She had an accident after reading a carefrontation letter from an anonymous friend and ended up in the hospital with a cast on her left arm. When she got back to school, everyone thought she tried to commit suicide and thus became an outcast.
During summer camp, she lost her v card to hot and popular Matty, who she has had a crush on for some time. What first started as a sexual relationship became more than that during the season, however, Matty is popular and cares for what others will think of him, so while he loves Jenna, he is too much of a coward to go public with Jenna who is deemed as a social loser.
Then there's Jake who is Matt's best friend, he started the season with the cute girlfriend Lissa. but after meeting Jenna and being friends with her, he develops a crush on her. He wasn't really planning to make a move since he has a girlfriend but when Lissa did something really awful and mean, Jake finally dumped her and has since been very vocal to Jenna as to how much he likes her. Jenna only likes Jake as a friend though they get along well, she is still so much in love with Matty.
She waited for Matty to ask her out at the Winter Formal but Matty was such a wuss and told Jenna for them to ditch the formal and just go somewhere else. This pissed Jenna as she wanted to go to the Formal and for Matty to publicly acknowledge them together but realizing that he is too afraid and he hasn't even told his best friend Jake about them, Jenna finally called it quits. She then accepted Jake's previous offer to take her to the Winter Formal. On the night of the Winter Formal, Jenna went with Jake and they had a great time. Matty finally woke up and went to Jenna's house to pick her up but she was gone. When Matty reached the Formal he saw Jenna and Jake kissing. Jake asked Matty (in front of Jenna and not knowing about her and Matty) if he had a date and Matty said no because the girl he likes is with another guy. Jake told Matty maybe he still has a chance. Matty looked at Jenna and asked her, and Jenna was deciding whether to follow her head (Jake) or her heart (Matty) and she decided to follow her hands and she held hands with Jake, implying to Matty that she chose Jake over him. Hurt, Matty left the Formal as he was announced the winner of the Sophomore Prince crown. Back home, Jake and Jenna make out some more but Jenna stopped and told Jake she wanted to take it slow and told Jake that this was the first time a guy held her hands in front of everyone. When Jake left and Jenna went inside and to her horror, found the same stationery that was used to write the mean carefrontation letter and realized it was her mom who wrote it!

The love triangle: Team Matty or Team Jake?
This is kinda hard as I love both Matty and Jake. Matty because he is actually very sweet and romantic and loves Jenna. I just hate that he'd rather save face than be with the person he loves. while Jenna loves Matty, i think it was right for her to dump Matty. Based from experience, guys who can't be man enough to show you to his friends and hiding you is not going to work, no matter how much you love him. Either he shapes up and you let him go. on the other hand, Jake is the complete opposite of his best friend. Jake is also sweet but he likes Jenna the way she is. He treats her right, not afraid to tell her and show her he likes her. Jake told Jenna that being with her is so easy and natural, to which Jenna agrees to. A friend once told me that when you're with the right person, everything will fall into place, and that's how i feel between Jake and Jenna. Right now, Jenna feels Jake is a friend and may have chosen him as a practical decision or to spite Matty, and it can go both ways -- either Jenna will realize that she loves Jake eventually after getting to know him more or Jenna feels that Jake is really just a friend and go back to Matty. I can't wait for Season 2 and curious how the writers will create the story. I personally wish that Jenna will go to the person she loves in the end: maybe Jake or Matty (only if he fights for Jenna).
Other characters that make up the show are:Tamara & Ming - Jenna's best friends. Tamara seems to be Jenna's BFF more than Ming and as much as she loves Jenna, i find her quite offensive -- she's tacky, rude, know it all and trying hard wannabe popular. I honestly dont know why Jenna is friends with Tamara but i guess underneath that abrasive and loud outer shell is a sweet soul. The side plot on Tamara and Ricky is amusing and I'm glad that Tamara is much more gutsy that she doesn't let Ricky step on her unlike Jenna with Matty. I like Ming, i wish she had more air time as she gives more sensible advice than Tamara. Hope that next season, she will get a better story and a boyfriend and not just having the stereotypical strict mom and Asian jokes.

Sadie & Lissa - Sadie is your typical rich popular bitch but unconventional because she is fat and not pretty. and this is the reason why she is mean to everyone, like a defense mechanism for not being sexy and pretty. At first she was the main adversary for Jenna but as the season progressed, she just became kinda annoying and I wish Jenna can stand up to her. Lissa is Sadie's best friend who seems really nice but also tend to have some mean tendencies that she picked up being with Sadie too much. I feel sad that Jake dumped her as she seemed to genuinely like Jake but she also needs to fix herself - maybe Jake might like her again or it would be funny if Lissa and Jenna become friends against Sadie as the last episode showed Lissa fighting with Sadie.

Jenna's parents are quite young as they had Jenna when they were in high school. Jenna's mom is quite embarrassing but know she only wants the best for Jenna. I can't believe she would write the letter, I just dont see her being too mean to her daughter. So either there has to be a reason why she would write it or she's not the real writer. I like Jenna's dad, he is the logical one to her mom's kookiness. But i also felt bad when Jenna asked her mom if given the chance would she choose her dad and her mom said she had no choice. Awww. Hope Jenna's mom will appreciate her husband more.

Valerie is the weird guidance counselor. she looks like Jenna Elfman, and i dont know if she's stupid and airhead or just naive but she is funny in a quirky way.

mentalist season 4 finale

The season finale was not as shocking as last year but held major surprises for me:

1. seeing patrick jane disheveled and scruffy for the very first time.. and he is still so hot.

2. his first time (i presume) being intimate with a woman since his family's passing (yes simon baker in bed kissing is sexy)

3. Jane telling lisbon, good luck and love you even though he denied remembering to say it after when confronted by lisbon.

but then this episode also felt flat due to:

1. little screen time for jane and lisbon. Felt the episode was rushed and bitin.

2. How did they fake the killing of a guy inside the police station

3. when Luthor wainwright came onboard i was undecided if he was with red john or one of the good guys. And i had a feeling he would die soon.

4. While finding wainwright dead with a taped mobile was a fun twist that red john has escaped yet again i felt bad for wainwright.

5. Fbi agent darcy to the rescue or is she the mole?

what im hoping for season 5:

1. that red john will finally have a face and be a real threat to jane and the cbi. He should be man enough to fight jane without his sidekicks. It would be more intriguing if there would be more action and less hide and seek... Kinda like sherlock and moriarty

2. That cbi will have a new head that will stick around for more than one season and actually become the team's champion and ally in defeating red john.

3. Better story for grace.

4. More intriguing cases.

Hope the new timeslot of sunday 10pm will not impact ratings for the mentalist.

moving to wonderland

one of the reasons i started this blog was to talk about one of my passion: books. over the years, i have blogged about the books that i have read and last night while i was chatting with my friend, she gave me an idea to bring back my focus on books. that's why i've decided to create a separate book blog that i aptly named, pages from wonderland. (big thanks to my friend for coming up with this cool name!)

in the next couple of days, i will be transferring my old book posts from this blog to the wonderland blog and hopefully i can continue to create better reviews in the future! occasionally, i will probably squeeze a couple of movie reviews (my other passion) too (either in this blog or the pfw blog).

here's the link: pagesfromwonderland.wordpress.com

happy reading!

movies april 2012

watched quite a bit this month
15. ides of march - great movie, im starting to like ryan gosling as an actor more and more (and he's hot)
16. tinker tailor sailor spy - a bit boring and confusing for me. i guessed who the bad guy was at the start of the movie and i was right (mainly because he was the most popular of the cast)
17. agatha christie's the clocks (old bbc tv movie) - very similar to the original book which i loved
18. the muppets - had tears in my eyes while watching this film surprisingly since i didnt even reach the heights of muppets popularity when i was young. i love the music esp man or muppet. love the cameos esp of sheldon cooper.
19 love you you - a taiwanese (?) movie about a guy and a girl in a resort.. got a bit emo when they showed the twist about the girl's condition but still fun movie to watch
20. wrath of titans - another big blockbuster with full effects and not much story
21. the hunger games - super hyped movie, i liked it but it was just too weird and brutal
22. you are the apple of my eye - love love love this movie. very poignant and sweet. i wish they ended up together (but then this is based on a true story of the director and his ex gf) but i still liked the ending.
23. school days with a pig - very interesting story. love the kids and the pig. i guess i'm old that's why i also made the same decision as with the teacher.
24. we bought a zoo - nice melodrama, thought the movie was long but it wasn't boring.
25. the sitter - jonah hill and his brand of humor. this was okay but harold and kumar is better
26. battleship - i actually liked this movie mostly because of the bravery of the crew. it just wasn't clear why there were aliens and why they wanted to kill us. and i wish alex skargard had more screen time.
27. hello ghost - i love cha tae hyun. i thought the movie was tooo long and part dragged a bit mostly because i couldn't understand the point of the ghost.. why they were there and their odd requests. but everything was explained in the end which made me teary eyed.

april 2012 book list

this month, i thought i'd read a book from different genres.. i tried to expand my selection a bit but didn't have a lot of time.

21 baby drive south by stephanie bond

The hardheaded Armstrong brothers are determined to rebuild their tornado-ravaged hometown in the Georgia mountains. They've got the means, they've got the manpower…what they need are women! So they place an ad in a northern newspaper and wait for the ladies to answer their call….
Porter, the youngest Armstrong, is all for importing women. Still, he's so blown away by the sheer numbers, he falls off the water tower. Luckily there's a doctor among the newcomers—sweet and sexy Dr. Nikki Salinger. And Porter has every intention of checking out her bedside manner….

4 stars - this is the first book of the southern roads trilogy about 3 brothers trying to rebuild their hometown. there's nothing special about the story but i like the characters and the buildup of the relationship between porter and nikki.

22 girl at sea by maureen johnson

The Girl: Clio Ford, seventeen, wants to spend the summer smooching her art-store crush, not stuck on a boat in the Mediterranean. At least she'll get a killer tan.
The Mission: Survive her father's crazy antics. Oh, and also find some missing underwater treasure that could unlock the secrets of civilization.
The Crew: Dad's wacky best friend Martin, his bizarre research partner Julia, her voluptuous daughter Elsa . . . and then there's Aidan, Julia's incredibly attractive, incredibly arrogant assistant.

3.5 stars - i have been trying to read this book for months but it was only now that i actually sat down and read the whole book. i like clio and elsa but i didnt like dad and julia. i wasn't sure about aidan though, feels like he never showed interest in clio yet he told her he liked her from the moment he saw her and he was grumpy. the missing underwater treasure plot dragged and the treasure didn't really feel like such. i also skipped over the parts retelling the story of the lady. but overall it was an okay read if you have nothing to do in an afternoon.

23 the deed by lynsay sands

Lady Emmalene Eberhart wanted to do it. She’d even begged an audience with the King so that he would order her husband to do it— because she was determined to be a good wife. But then her husband died, and Emma remained a virgin.
Now the innocent young beauty finds herself with an ample dowry and promised to Amaury de Aneford, a landless knight whose able sword helped defend the King’s crown. Surely her new husband would want to do the deed, for his rugged good looks certainly make Emma’s heart skip more than a beat. And Emma suspects there is more to a wedding night than just a sound sleep . . . and more to true love than she ever imagined.

4 stars - i remember back in high school when i loved historical romances cause they had traditional values, hot dukes, gorgeous ladies and beautiful love story. but now, reading this genre just wanted to make me laugh from the absurdity of the plot. or maybe it was just this book in particular. though this book mixed romance with some mystery and action so it was alright. author kept it interesting by making the story fast paced so despite the thin plotline, i still enjoyed this book.
24 spellbound by rachel hawkins

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium.  Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident. Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

4 stars - final book of the hex hall trilogy which i quite enjoyed. though honestly i kind of forgotten the story of the second book (i just remember them trapped in the house then the kids she was staying with were controlled by demons etc). it did sort of reminded me of harry potter when they all went back to hogwarts to protect the school though the difference is in hex hall, the bad people are running the school. i liked the final fight scene. and the ending was satisfying. again, so many other books that trumps twilight like this series.

25 any given christmas by candis terry

Dean Silverthorne's mother may be dead, but she still has matchmaking to do.
When an injury dashes NFL Quarterback Dean Silverthorne's Super Bowl dreams, he heads back to Deer Lick, Montana, with a chip on his wounded shoulder, more determined than ever to get back in the game. He loves his kooky family, but this trip home is going to be a very brief Christmas visit.
His game plan doesn't include an instant attraction to Emma Hart, a feisty kindergarten teacher who seems to be the only person in Deer Lick not interested in the hometown hero. Or his dearly departed mom popping up with mistletoe in hand and meddling on the mind. Now Dean can't help but wonder if there's more to love than life between the goal posts.

4 stars - this is the second book of the sugar shack series (i haven't read the first book) though it doesnt matter. i dont understand what's the purpose of the dead mom trying to matchmake her children, this could have been left out or they could have kept the mom alive and the plot would still move along. i think i've read a couple of books similar to this one (yes because i love sports romances esp between an athlete and a totally different personality) so while this was a fun and easy read, it was nothing groundbreaking.

castle season 4 finale

Spoilers ahead!!

“Because of everything we’ve been through together! Four years, I’ve been right here. Four years, I’ve been waiting for you to open your eyes and see that I’m right here, and I’m more than a partner,” “Every morning I bring a cup of coffee just so I can see a smile on your face because I think you are the most remarkable, maddening, challenging, frustrating person I’ve ever met. And I love you Kate, and if that means anything to you — if you love me at all — just don’t do this.” - Rick Castle

Ahhh! Finally after 4 years Castle and Beckett together at last!! I loved their journey together, their constant bickering, their playfulness, their partnership. Last year's finale was explosive and shocking with Montgomery's death and Kate getting shot to Castle's "I love you", but this year's finale was equally explosive, but on a different side. I love how the show finally addressed the story of will they or wont they. I"m glad they decided to put it out in the open. As Alexis said, it's about ending and moving on. I feel like Season 5 will be a fresh beginning, for Kate and Castle, even for Javi and Ryan. I dont know what's gonna happen but I hope they go back to a little fun side like they did in seasons 1 and 2. And more creative cases!

Castle: Beckett, what do you want?
Beckett: You.
[kiss]
Beckett: I’m so sorry, Castle. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.
Castle: What happened?
Beckett: He got away, and I didn’t care. I almost died, and all I could think about was you. I just want you.
